A deadly train derailment in the southern state of Oaxaca has claimed the lives of at least 13 people, an incident expected to reignite critical opposition regarding the pace and management of the country's key public works projects.
The crash happened on the trans-isthmus railway, a route developed to link the Atlantic and Pacific across the thinnest stretch of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This project was created to offer an different freight railway path to the Panama Canal, aimed at driving commercial progress in the area.
“We are going to rigorously clarify what caused this tragedy,” stated the national leader.
The president confirmed that, of the around 250 people on board, another 98 were injured, with five of those in critical condition. The official added plans to visit Oaxaca to confer with those affected.
Major Initiative of Previous Administration
The Interoceanic Train was a signature development scheme of the former leader, whose time in office ended the prior year. This project was a hallmark of his government's developmental agenda for the southern region.
Another multi-billion dollar train initiative from that period, a passenger and freight circuit around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also integral to the comprehensive effort to revitalize the economic fortunes of a comparatively disadvantaged part of the country.
Construction Oversight and Risks Apprehensions
The construction of both rail lines was managed by the army, marking a notable growth of its duties in public infrastructure. They were completed at an rapid rate, surpassing predictions to be partially opened before the end of that presidency.
However, this rushed timetable had also fueled ongoing questions over operational security.
- Sunday's accident was the third occurrence on the Interoceanic Train within the past twelve months.
- This encompasses an prior accident this month when a train hit a truck at a level crossing.
- The other major rail project has also experienced a couple of non-lethal derailments.
Appeals for Investigation and Halt
In the aftermath of the catastrophe, the leader of a major opposition party demanded an urgent suspension in the development and management of all comparable projects.
This halt was proposed pending a comprehensive independent investigation. The party emphasized that the situation "requires prompt explanations."
In response, the president insisted that the train had been operating in total accordance with all operational standards. Commitments were given that the government would continue to be "diligent" in both the construction and running of these national undertakings.
