EU Could Respond to ‘Unjustified’ US Visa Bans, Spokesperson States

The European Union might “respond swiftly and decisively” against what it calls “unjustified” visa bans imposed by the US against five Europeans involved in fighting digital hatred and disinformation, a European Commission spokesperson has said.

European Leaders Condemn US Action as ‘Coercion’

European leaders including Emmanuel Macron charged Washington of “coercion and intimidation”, after the visa restrictions targeted figures that were at the heart of campaigns to introduce legislation governing US-based technology firms.

“For far too long, ideologues in Europe have led organised efforts to pressure US companies to suppress American viewpoints they disagree with,” stated the US secretary of state online. “This government will no longer tolerate such actions of extraterritorial censorship.”

Broad Criticism From EU Nations

Nations including Germany, Spain, and the UK, alongside numerous EU representatives supported the French president in criticizing the decision.

The restrictions were enacted on Tuesday against a former EU commissioner involved in crafting the EU’s digital governance law, along with four activists fighting false information, including Germany and the United Kingdom.

A Deepening Dispute Regarding Governance

This European legislation is viewed by US officials as a form of censorship, while EU authorities argue the rules are necessary to control hate speech and disinformation.

This row threatens to become a facet of a much broader ongoing political and ideological clash between Washington and Europe.
